Students interested in brain research have been eager for an undergraduate neuroscience program at the University of British Columbia, and thanks to the leadership of faculty including Dr. Tim O’Connor, the program inches ever closer to reality.
New funding from a partnership of SickKids Hospital and the CIHR Institute for Human Development, Child and Youth Health will support Dr. Annie Ciernia’s (pictured) research into the epigenetic mechanisms driving changes in the brains of kids with a rare form of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and epilepsy.
An analysis of more than 1,000 brain scans from healthy individuals discovered fundamental rules for how connections between brain regions regulate brain functions. The research team used advanced computational methods to define the “controllability” of each brain region, meaning the degree of control each region exerts on all others.
Mental health research at UBC has received a significant boost for young investigators to build greater capacity for innovative, translational research in mental health.
